It’s surprising how many people don’t know what marketing is. In layman terms, marketing is a strategy a business uses to expose its brand and develop a stronger customer-brand relationship. On the face of it, this might seem very simple. After all, you can buy marketing courses for a few dollars using nothing but your Xfinity internet plans. But is an online course enough to give you enough grounding? Some would argue even four years of an undergrad degree are not enough. Especially when it comes to writing a marketing dissertation.
Why is Help needed with Marketing Dissertations?
Writing a dissertation is no easy task. Especially a marketing dissertation. You have to justify your research objectives. Then you have to carry out primary and secondary research to verify them. During your research, most of the marketing literature you find will be very dense. Empirical frameworks are also very intense, making the problem even more complex. Even the smartest students often drive themselves up the wall writing a marketing dissertation. Some of the problems they encounter are:
- Not the Right Supervisor
- Subject Matter Density
- (Un)Friendly Competition
- Panic and Doubt
- Social Interference
Let’s have a brief look at each problem.
Not the Right Supervisor
Your dissertation supervisor is going to be a key factor in how well you write your dissertation. If your supervisor doesn’t feel right, change ASAP. I was lucky to have a brilliant supervisor but everyone isn’t. If you feel you aren’t getting the right advice, apply for a change early on. If you’re early, and your reasons are valid, your university is not likely to cause problems. Of course, dissertation supervisors are generally well-informed. And they have some degree of expertise in the subject. But this is not a question of competence. This is a matter of how approachable, reliable, reassuring and detailed they are. Your dissertation supervisor is your most important chance of succeeding with your dissertation. So make sure you’re comfortable with them.
Subject Matter Density
The subject matter for a dissertation, especially marketing dissertations, is usually very dense. It covers concepts like:
- Direct marketing
- Indirect Marketing
- Attention, Interest, Desire, Action (AIDA) theories
These are just the tip of the iceberg. Marketing covers many concepts, theories, and empirical frameworks. Your research will expose you to some very dense materials. This is one of the biggest problems that marketing students face when writing their dissertations. Dissertations have a much higher degree of difficulty than writing an essay or a project. So, many students fail.
When you’re an undergrad, you are more laidback than usual. Your main evaluation of your academic standing is through where your peers stand. When writing a dissertation, this is one of the worst things you can do. Students ask friends and classmates how much work they’ve done. Then they compare it to their own dissertations. Since humans are prone to exaggeration, the answers are rarely accurate. But they’re enough to send students panicking. Many feel their friends have already gotten far ahead. This compounds their difficulties. Ignore what your friends are doing and concentrate on your own writing if you value your sanity.
Panic and Doubt
This is going to happen to almost every dissertation student until the end of time. During the process, you will reach a point where you break down. You doubt the work you have done so far. You question your own proficiency. Maybe you decide on a better research objective and want to start over from scratch. You may even collapse and have a good cry. What most students don’t know is, you don’t have to start over. Unless you have made some serious errors and your supervisor suggests a fresh start, you don’t have to. What you are experiencing is panic and doubt, which will pass if you give it time.
At some point, you will find your dissertation is interfering with your social life. You will start missing social meetups, sports commitments, and even other academic assignments. You will forget why you even pay for a Xfinity double play deals. Many students, especially the fun-loving crowd, find this to be a huge pain in the neck. They get caught between their academic and social obligations. Usually, they end up being unable to meet either of them.
